Somali Pirates attempt to Hijack North Korean Ship Empty
PostSubject: Somali Pirates attempt to Hijack North Korean Ship   Somali Pirates attempt to Hijack North Korean Ship Icon_minitimeSat Apr 11, 2009 1:07 pm

Just saw this news blurb:

Pirates have made another attempt to hijack a ship, this time north of Somalia in the Gulf of Aden, the Nato Shipping Centre reports. The agency said on Friday that the Motor Vessel Ryu Gyong, a bulk carrier is sailing under the North Korean flag.

More info as it becomes available....

Two thoughts -
1. I would think that a NK ship would be heavily armed, they don't seem like they mess around with anyone concerning their stuff. The hijack was unsucsessful, so were they firing back?
2. They have bulk carriers? I don't think of NK as a bulk importing kind of country.

The Somali pirates have just learned not to attack ships flying the American flag. When they do, the Americans will fight back and overpower them and kill them. Lesson learned.

Props to President Obama for giving the order to kill these guys, but it's more than troubling that a 16 year old kid and 3 buddies in a rubber boat can chase down a 17,300 ton 510 foot American ship, nearly hijack it, make off with the Captain, and from a rowboat hold off the American Navy for 5 days.

I don't understand why every ship doesn't carry a couple RPGs and blast these pirates out of the water whenever they come near. From what I've heard, the only thing they are using to fight them now are waterhoses.

It's because the shipping companies are bound by what their laywers and insurance companies tell them what's ok and what's not. Everyone (except for maybe NK) is afraid of liability, and therefore, no weapons for American and European merchant sailors and their ships.

It always about the money, isn't it. But liability = money paid out, and companies are paying millions in ransom anyways. What we should do is blanket this area with drones and PT boats, and also make an open offer to station a protection squad of 5 armed and dangerous US Marines on any ship that enters the area. That along with the French continuing to kick ass on motherships would send these pirates running back to their sandbox.

North Korea vessel crew overpower pirates, take control

MOGADISHU – (UPDATE) Crew members of a North Korean cargo vessel Tuesday overpowered Somali pirates and violently regained control of the freighter captured off Mogadishu port, elders and a maritime official said.

The 22-strong crew of the MV Dia Honga Dan overpowered armed pirates who had seized it overnight Monday and were demanding thousands of dollars in ransom, they said.

The pirates who had seized the boat were members of a Somali clan who were meant to be guarding it, said officials in Mogadishu.

"The crew members have taken control of the ship after defeating the eight men who hijacked it last night," said Dahir Hassan, an elder in the Somali port of Haradere, explaining that the crew had managed to reach their weapons.

"There are casualties, but we are not sure the exact number of dead or injured," he added.

These pirates should just ignore the North Korean ships, anyway. They probably would not get huge ransoms, if any at all. And unlike the American and European ships, they're armed. But I guess the pirates already learned their lesson.

NK left out something. The full story about that 2007 incident:

US ship helps North Korea vessel crew overpower Somali pirates
Oct 30, 2007

MOGADISHU (AFP) — The US Navy helped the crew of a North Korean cargo vessel regain control of their freighter in a violent struggle Tuesday after it was captured by pirates off Mogadishu port, it said.

At least two attackers died in the clashes and five were captured, while three of the 22-strong crew of the MV Dai Hong Dan crew were seriously injured, the Bahrain-based US Naval Forces Central Command said.

The USS James E. Williams responded after the Kuala Lumpur-based International Maritime Bureau passed on a distress signal from the North Korean ship following its seizure by pirates overnight Monday.

"Three seriously injured crew members have been transferred to the James E. Williams for treatment," the statement said.

"Initial reports from the crew are that five pirates were captured and two are dead. The pirates remain aboard the Dai Hong Dan."

The North Korean ship was headed to the Somali port of Aden with casualties on board, said Andrew Mwangura, head of the Kenya chapter of the Seafarers' Assistance Programme.

Earlier Ali Gabow Jillo, the Mogadishu trader who had contracted the vessel, told AFP that the US Navy had helped it regain control.

I dont' think the US so much "helped" them overpower the pirates, it sounds more like they showed up after it was over and took on some injured pirates.

But check out this latest incident!

The Somali Pirates Hijack A North Korean Icebreaker
14 April 2009
THE INDIAN OCEAN - The Somali Pirates angry as the dickens after their loss to the United States Navy Seals have just announced that they have hijacked an icebreaker that is leased to the North Korean government.

Kim Jong il, chairman of the North Korean National Defense Commission, has reportedly sent a message to the pirates that they had better release the Icebreaker, The NKS Rice Paddy and her crew of 19,342 sailors or risk having the North Korean Air Force launch its one remaining missile at their lifeboat.

North Korea has stated that they are still highly embarrassed about their satellite missile/big bottle rocket that they fired and which limped over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean, killing 14 sardines, 17 tilapia, 45 guppies, and an aged porpoise.

Kim Jong il said that his country was the laughing stock nation of the week last week, but not this week.

He firmly stated that if the pirates do not release The NKS Rice Paddy soon, then North Korea will have no choice but to top off her rocket's fuel tank, light the fuse, and fire that baby off.

When informed that the pirates ransom demands only include 20 bags of rice, a used sampan, a used rickshaw, a used water buffalo leash, and $18, Kim Jong il replied, "It's the principle of the thing. And besides the price of used water buffalo leashes has skyrocketed in the last month to almost 400 percent."
