NEW FROM NORTH KOREA - PYONGYANG TRAFFICGIRL BARBIE!

Apparently the North Koreans are now making trafficgirl dolls!

Unquestionably they realize the universal popularity of their traffic ladies, and are responding to international demand.

Just back from the Chinese Consulate for my open visa. I have been trying to get Koryo Tours to let me go to more locations to photograph the traffic girls and of course that is very hard to do but now that I know some folks in Pyongyang I am going to see what I can do.

I have one visit scheduled in late November (taking the entire family!) to shoot the winter uniforms this time. My wife is a photographer too so lets see what she can do. It will be the usual tour but I have a half day free ...

I have telephoto lenses at the ready and I am scheduled to be at several intersections. If I can do as well as last year then I will be really happy.

I plan to take a Lomo Diana film camera to do some art shots of the girls. I will not be at the Koryo Hotel (stuck on Alcatraz island for a few nights) so there will be limits. I will be out ...

As I came through customs I noticed my guide from 2008, Mr. Lee, waiting for the latest group of newbies to arrive. He greeted me and asked me to do something. I had deep political discussions with him last October and we got to know each other. He asked me to look around and see if I noticed any changes from last year. I was surprised, changes here? I assured him I would be in touch. I was meeting up with a group of seven Americans to become the first to go into the countryside.

I have this morbid realization about the PTGs - about how they stand in the middle of the intersection with cars coming at them from 4 different directions. Eventually, the odds are that either by accident or on purpose one of them will get run over and killed. A painted circle and baton is not much protection against an errant automobile. They are indeed brave young ladies.

How Many Intersections of Pyongyang have Traffic Girls?
