SEOUL, South Korea — One story about Kim Jong Il, the much-caricatured dictator of North Korea, goes like this:

He is driving through the streets of his capital, Pyongyang, one day and notices a shivering, female traffic officer. Struck in part, perhaps, by her beauty, Kim sets off immediately to personally design and issue new, warmer uniforms.

PTGs risking their lives

I have this morbid realization about the PTGs - about how they stand in the middle of the intersection with cars coming at them from 4 different directions. Eventually, the odds are that either by accident or on purpose one of them will get run over and killed. A painted circle and baton is not much protection against an errant automobile. They are indeed brave young ladies.

But those who work with unusual pride like us girl traffic controllers will be few and far between, I think.

The other day the Chinese ambassador to our country visited one of our posts and said to us in admiration: What comes in ...

They are absolutely worshiped by male drivers, as the persuit of the idol - if any drivers did have the privilege of being stopped by the female traffic police, they would enjoy the happiness of a lifetime, and I do not know how many men ...

1. You can’t turn off the government radio installed in your home, only reduce the volume.

2. Idolatry in North Korea is such that it is second-nature for ordinary citizens to “rescue” portraits of Kim Il Sung before all else in the case of a house fire (there are even special bunkers for statues in case of war)

3. Many people don’t even know that man has walked on the moon.

4. There is no Internet, cell-phones have been banned.

A night time PTG, with vest and lighted baton....

Great pic - the blurred motion of the bus isolates this PTG.

I've never noticed a PTG with white boots before. Lookin' good...

A rain PTG, again with the white boots ......

An off-duty PTG, missing her belt and holding an umberella.....

These aren't intended as plugs but I just finished reading "The Reluctant Communist - My Desertion, Court Martial, and Forty-Year Imprisonment in North Korea" by Charles Robert Jenkins, and watching "Crossing the Line" which tells the story of James Joseph Dresnok, and found both stories very interesting.

The girls look decent and well-dressed. Are these pictures at training spots or did they pose for the camera. I do not see much traffic that they have to direct.

Hi guys! I just did a feature on the Pyongyang Traffic Girls (or "Wardens," as I referred to them in the entry) at Asian Sirens:

http://www.asian-sirens.com/blog/comments.php?id=1941_0_1_0_C

I owe a big thanks to your forum for helping me get a lot (but not all) of the info for the entry.
